All Indonesians know corruption is harmful, but ironically it persists, if not has been increasingly practised. Indonesia needs a new strategy to fight the plague: it is time to convince every citizen, the “usual” people, to empower themselves and began to fight it pro-actively.

Most of the time, corruption is discussed normatively as a big, national issue, with grand strategy and conspiracy involved. However the truth shows us corruption stems from small things we do unwittingly, trivial stuffs that we dismiss as features of everyday life, practices that eventually make us accustomed to the virus. To prevent the vicious circle, it makes perfect sense to address such issues to youth, the future leaders, via pop culture darling called movie.

Transparency International Indonesia, Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi (Corruption Eradication Commission), Management Systems International, United States Agency for International Development, and Cangkir Kopi joined forces to make Kita versus Korupsi (We versus Corruption), an omnibus of four short films. The parcel, made by Indonesia’s leading young directors and actors, will be screened for free across Indonesia — the first roadshow will travel through 17 cities — and published as DVDs as well as aired in television channels.

Each film deals with everyday issues, where corrupt practices sneak into daily lives. Rumah Perkara (House of Trouble) portrays how a man who wants to be the village chief tell promises in the campaign, but then after elected, he sell lands to real estate developer. Aku Padamu (I’m Into You) is about a couple whose plan to marry is endangered due to incompleteness of documents, which makes the groom-to-be want to bribe civil service officer. Selamat Siang Risa! (Good Day Risa!) tells us the story of an honest and steadfast warehouse guard who tries hard to resist any bribe. Meanwhile, Pssst Jangan Bilang Siapa-siapa (Shhh, Don’t Tell Anyone)is about a teacher who gives good grade only for students who buy books from him (the books’ prices are of course marked-up from the regular retail price).

Interestingly, Kita versus Korupsi is also scheduled to be screened by the Indonesian Police Headquarters, one of the institutions that is usually thought as where corruption is already institutionalised. Let’s hope that the movie will go beyond entertainment and training sessions in such institutions.

The omnibus is equipped with English subtitles and can be screened in your place, too! Just contact them here:
