The cold war has ended more than two decades ago but Berliners take care of their memories, preserve it, polish it as if it’s brand new. The DDR museum, the checkpoints, remnants of the infamous wall.. even the bunkers underneath the subway stations, still ready to have three thousands refugees.
Yet I’m being sentimental and remember that one time when maple leaves were still holding tight to their branches in the summer. When Kurfurstendamm and Potsdamer Platz sounded like strange places so distant at the other side of the world. When I was a hopeless romantic, torn between pain and infatuation.
I’m glad I’m a much better person now. It’s just that I remember things a bit too much than I’m supposed to. But now I can look back at it and smile.
“Hi Berlin, nice to finally meet you.”
